Robotics + Art

Before this week I understood how technology could possibly contribute to art. For example, tattoos artist will use drawing pads in order to expand, sketch and add more details to their tattoos. In addition, architectures will use computers in order to provide their customers a 3-D model of their building. However, after this week lectures and readings I was shocked to learn that art actually influenced new forms of technology. For example, the idea of a robot actually came out of theater as a mechanism of labor(Industrialization, Robotics, Kinetic/Robotic Art Lecture). To simplify, during the industrialization period mass production led laborers to be seen as machines because they did one task over and over again. Hence, they were ultimately machines(robots). For example, in Ford's assembly line, each worker would only have one task; which would speed up  his production of cars.  Hence, creating a mass production(Industrialization, Robotics, Kinetic/Robotic Art Lecture). Based on this one assumes that the influence of art in technology is a positive one because it helped the
economy.

However, Walter Benjamin author of " The Work of Art in the Age of Mechnical Reproduction" points out that the influence of art in technology can also be a negative. Benjamin states that the "mechanical reproduction of art changes the reaction of the masses toward art"(Benjamin). In other words, when art is created in masses it loses its beauty, and no longer is seen as art. For example, Mexican pottery that is hand painted  is a beautiful piece of art because each piece of pottery is unique and demonstrates the landscapes of Mexico. If it were to be created  by mass production it longer would be considered art because hundred of people would have the same object.

Yet another example where we see art influenced technology is in the film Wall-E. In order make earth livable again human have created machines in order to clean up the trash that humans created. In other words, in this film humans pretty much destroyed the beauty of earth through pollution and waste. As a result they created Wall-E a robot whose only job  is to clean earth up in order for the  humans to came back.  The art of this film is that is has actually influenced large companies to create robot vacuums. Such as the Dyson 360 Eye.

To conclude, art can influence technology in both a positive and negative way.
